Laser light cross the sky

Every time a detector on top of the the 210-metre (689-feet) Montparnasse Tower picks up a sub-atomic particle called a muon, a pulse of laser light will flash across the sky of the city's Latin Quarter from the Paris Observatory. Boyle, 85, were honored for inventing a charge-coupled device, or CCD, which is at the heart of most digital cameras, turning light into electrical signals. The CCD captures those signals in a way that makes it possible to create the pixel-by-pixel images displayed on a screen.
